Frequently asked questions:

What should I wear?

It’s advisable to dress smartly on your first day to make a positive first impression, thereby increasing your chances of being invited back. Each school or nursery might have a different dress code, so it’s best to confirm with your consultant. Also, be prepared for activities such as PE classes. For SEND placements, follow any specific dress code instructions, such as avoiding jewelry or scarves for safety reasons.

What should I take in to schools?

Always bring your DBS certificate and photo ID, even if you’ve been to the school before. It’s also beneficial to have a lesson plan ready in case one is not provided for you.

What if I'm late?

If you are running late, inform your consultant by phone at least 15 minutes before your expected arrival time so they can notify the school or nursery. Aim to arrive 10 minutes early, as punctuality is crucial. Keeping your consultant informed helps avoid inconveniencing the school and maintains a good professional image.

Do I get a break?

Check with the placement coordinator (your named point of contact in the school, as shown on your assignment booking form) about break times. Short placements may not include breaks, while longer ones typically allow for at least half an hour to an hour. Follow the school’s specific guidelines regarding breaks.

What are the parking arrangements?

Knowing where to park is important, especially if you’re driving to the school. Your consultant is familiar with each school and will provide you with detailed parking information for your first assignment at a new location.

What if I can't make my booking?

If you cannot make a booking, call before 7:30 am to allow time for a replacement to be found. Avoid using email or text, as these messages might be missed during a busy morning.

What are the key things to remember for my placement?

Report to reception upon arrival, familiarize yourself with the school’s policies, and ensure you have suitable materials for the assigned year groups. Complete all marking and handover notes at the end of the day to maintain a good impression and increase your chances of being rehired.

What if there is a safeguarding issue?

Report any safeguarding concerns immediately to the designated officer at the school and inform your recruitment consultant as well.

How much work can you offer me?

While we cannot guarantee a specific volume of work, we are actively seeking staff to meet demand. We offer both day-to-day and long-term placements tailored to your availability and preferences.

How do I update my availability?

Keep your recruitment consultant informed of your availability for the upcoming week through phone, text, or email.

Ruth, Teacher.

Fair Teachers is an excellent agency if you like to feel you are working with someone rather than working for them. You get all the information you need for each job from the situation with the planning to possible parking issues. The pay is more than fair as the name suggests and you are made to feel like you really matter. I personally have worked years of supply and it has never felt so positive.

Kathleen, Teacher.

Working for Maria at Fair  Teachers is great. She is so friendly, has close communication with me and more importantly she really understands the rural area I live in compared to other agents who have no idea about amount of time it would take me to get to a specific school. Currently, Maria has given me a lot of work at a lovely, local school which is only 20 minute drive away. She always appreciates the work I do, getting great feedback from the school. Maria gives me plenty notice for pre booked days and it’s never a problem if I can’t work certain days for family commitments or if I’m working in another school. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending Fair  Teachers to another supply teacher.

Debbie, Teacher

As the name suggests, Fair Teachers is fair to teachers. Most importantly to me, the communication is effective and messages are responded to. I know that if I send a message to Maria then I will receive a response. This cannot be under-estimated when working as a supply teacher. I feel valued and listened to. I would recommend Fair Teachers because it is personal, not impersonal. Also, living in a rural area, distance is important to me and I want assignments that are realistic in terms of travelling times. I also prefer to make connections in local schools where I would like to do repeat bookings. Maria understood this from the outset and did not try to send me to areas outside of my comfort zone / preferred travelling distance. I appreciate all of the links that I have made via Fair Teachers and I would be happy to recommend Fair Teachers to those in education i.e. TAs, teachers and schools.”
